How the score is calculated
This site builds both charts first, then scores the pair out of 100 through four steps. The criteria are deliberately different in kind, so that no single item decides the relationship on its own.
- 1. The elements of the two day stems - a generating pair starts high, the same element starts in the middle, and a controlling pair starts low.
- 2. Yin and yang - stems of opposite polarity are read as complementary and nudge the score up; the same polarity nudges it down.
- 3. Crossed Ten Gods - if you see each other as Wealth or Authority, the roles interlock and the score rises; if either sees the other as a Peer (a rival), it falls.
- 4. Harmony and clash between the day branches - Six or Three Harmony adds, while Clash, Punishment or Harm subtracts. This is the adjustment that moves the score most.
Reading the score and grade
Scores fall into four bands. Read the grade as a pointer to what deserves attention, not as a verdict on whether the relationship works.
- 85 and above - Excellent. You lift each other up; the task is not to grow careless inside that comfort.
- 70-84 - Good. Little fundamental friction, so most things resolve in conversation.
- 50-69 - Fair. Parts click and parts need adjusting, so how it feels varies with circumstance.
- 49 and below - Caution. Different in grain. It lasts when you accept the difference instead of trying to change each other.

The day branch - how the spouse seats meet
Among the eight characters, the day branch is traditionally called the spouse seat. It is the ground you stand on every day and the seat where the closest person sits, so a compatibility reading weighs how the two day branches meet especially heavily.
Branches relate to each other in five main ways: Six Harmony pairs pull toward each other, Three Harmony gathers three branches in one direction, Clash meets head-on, Punishment grows sensitive at close range, and Harm quietly misses.
A Clash does not mean a relationship is doomed. It is also the force that pushes out what had gone stagnant, so pairs that come through the friction often grow the most.
What a compatibility reading can and cannot tell you
A compatibility reading looks at how two innate temperaments interlock; it does not foretell an outcome. With the same score, how the two of you handle the difference sends the relationship in completely different directions.
This calculation centres on the two day stems and day branches. A full consultation would also weigh the other six characters, both luck cycles and the timing of the meeting - so treat the score here as a starting point.
If a birth time is unknown, the chart is built from three pillars instead of four. You still get a result, but a less precise one.
The Five Elements at a glance
The five elements form both a generating cycle that feeds each other and a controlling cycle that restrains. This is where a compatibility score starts.

Branch compatibility by zodiac sign
The relationships between the twelve branches, laid out by zodiac sign. A full reading weighs the day branches more heavily than the year branch, but this is the table that popular zodiac compatibility comes from.

Frequently asked
If the score is low, should we not date?
No. A low score usually means the two temperaments have a different grain - and a different grain also means each of you holds what the other lacks. Many long-lasting relationships score in the middle; what decides a relationship is how the two of you handle the difference, not the number.
Can I enter only birth dates, without names?
Yes. Names are used only to address the two of you on the result screen and never enter the calculation. Leave them blank and you will see 'Person 1' and 'Person 2'.
Can we still get a reading if a birth time is unknown?
Yes. Without a time the chart is built from three pillars, and the day stem and day branch - the core of a compatibility reading - still come out. The reading is simply narrower for the missing hour pillar.
Will the same two people get a different score next time?
No. The same birth data always produces the same score. Nothing is randomised; the score comes only from the relationships found in the two charts.
Is compatibility for partners different from compatibility for business?
The underlying relationships are the same, but you read them in different directions. A pair who see each other as Peers feels like easy friends in romance but slips into a tug-of-war over control in business, while a Wealth-and-Authority interlock is especially strong at work. The result page splits this into three readings under 'By type of relationship'.
