Five Elements Glossary — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

Earth (土)

Earth is the element of the season's turn, standing for mediation and containment. Like soil that holds and supports everything growing in it, it represents the force that balances the other four elements and holds the center.

Earth generates Metal and is generated by Fire; Earth controls Water and is controlled by Wood. This generating/controlling cycle (相生相剋) is what decides how any two elements meet in a chart or a compatibility reading.

Frequently asked

What does it mean to lack Earth in a chart?

Building a sense of stability and trust may take a bit more time. A missing element is not a flaw by itself — it usually just means that trait needs to be built deliberately rather than coming naturally.

What does too much Earth look like?

Change can feel harder to accept, coming across as stubborn. An element present in excess tends to dominate the personality, so the chart is often read alongside what tempers it — the element Earth is controlled by.
